Rome was once the most powerful city in the world ruling over the majority of today's Europe, Middle East and Northern Africa. Founded in 800 BC, Rome is now a large city of 3 million people that has successfully interwoven its historical backdrop into a modern city. Rome has recently gone through a mass renovation of its many monuments, museums, squares and various districts to make the tourist experience less chaotic. Many streets are now pedestrian zones, a bus system is in place and the metro is being extended. However, Rome is best experienced on foot and, with most of the major tourist sites clustered together, it is best to experience the Eternal City while walking from one monument to the next.

With so many sites, Rome can be overwhelming, so it's best to take your time to enjoy the major monuments, while also indulging in the dolce vita (good life) that Rome has to offer - linger at a sidewalk café, enjoy a glass of Chianti or a delicious gelato.

Many of Rome's areas are named after the major monument located in that area so it is easy to navigate from one site to the next. Staying in a rental flat in Rome also offers your family the chance to experience the urban undercurrent of the city, and to come in contact with its inhabitants, seeing Rome not just through the eyes of a tourist but as a temporary habitant.

Centro Storico (historic district) is generally the area visited first in Rome. Here, you will find most of the ancient Roman ruins including the Coliseum, Roman Forum, and the Pantheon, just to name a few. The historic district is also a popular location for holiday flats. For art lovers, the museums of Capitoline Hill, the oldest public museums in the world, are found in this district. When visiting the winding streets around the Pantheon and Piazzo Navona , you'll be enchanted by the renaissance architecture, numerous cafes, trattorias and plazas throughout the area. Another centrally located district for holiday rentals is near the famous Spanish Steps, a well-known meeting place that is much admired. To take a break from the bustling Roman atmosphere, located just north of the Spanish Steps is the largest public park in Rome, Villa Borghese . The park features museums, temples, fountains and statues. For some of the best shopping in Rome walk down the Via Condotti to find fashionable shops and boutiques.

The Trevi Fountain, the most famous and arguably the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome, is another major historical attraction for tourists. If you head across the Tiber, you will find Vatican City. Located within its walls, there are the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. This part of Rome is another area that is popular for holiday flats. On the same side of the Tiber, Trastevere is an up-and-coming cosmopolitan area that is now a spot for dining and nightlife.

With so many historic attractions, Rome is a city to return to year after year. Find your perfect Rome apartment and you will have a home in the city to return to.
