Rome hotels

The city of Rome requires a lot of walking from its visitors. Rarely is this a problem in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but it is something to keep in mind while planning a trip. For the most part, hostels in Rome are centered around Roma Termini, the city's main train station and metro hub on the east side of the city. Rome's two metro lines intersect at Termini, meaning that this area is the best place to be for those who expect to be doing a lot of exploring. St. Peter's Basilica and the Castel Sant'Angelo are the most removed tourist sights, across the river to the northwest, but both are easily reachable by metro. The best sights to see by day are reachable by metro and foot, while the best nightlife is across the river to the southwest in Trastevere where unfortunately few hostels reside.

For a consistent and well-liked hostel near Termini, try Pensione Giamaica where you can get a bed for $33. The University of Rome Sapienza is nearby, naturally followed by some of the city's best nightlife, but Giamaica is a good bet for those who are looking to catch up on sleep as it is far enough away from the student party scene that the quiet is not broken.

For around $24 you can get a bed at Sandy Hostel, close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Everything is walkable from Sandy Hostel, including the popular shopping street, Via del Corso, where you can find some of the city's most interesting sites as well as bars, shops and restaurants. If you follow it for long enough, you will find Piazza del Popolo and one of the city's seven original obelisks. Termini station is only a few metro stops away from Sandy Hostel, facilitating a quick ride to the airport.

To the northwest, right next to the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica is Pensione Ottaviano, a fairly cheap option for those who want to be close to one of the most beautiful churches in the world for only $25. Ottaviano is one of the oldest backpacker hostels in Rome and provides its guests with a good location and comfortable amenities, including Internet access and a movie room. Ottaviano has walking tours and pub-crawls arranged so that you can get the absolute most out of the city for which romance was named.
